Fifty years ago, on August 11, 1973, Cindy Campbell hosted a legendary back-to-school party. On this fateful night, her older brother Clive, better known as DJ Cool Herc, used two turntables to extend the drum break. It was there, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in Morris Heights, South Bronx, that Hip-Hop was born.
Half a century later, the party is still going strong. Hip Hop has evolved into a worldwide cultural movement and a multi-billion dollar industry. However, the culture is more than just music; Hip Hop has five pillars—DJing, MCing, Breakdancing, Graffiti and Knowledge of Self. Through these channels of Music, Poetry, Dance, Art, and Social Conscienceness, Hip Hop has had a profound impact on the entire globe, every industry, and arguably every person, whether they realize it or not.
This series of paintings is a tribute to the poets, the MCs, the spoken word—the very soul of Hip Hop. Some of these people are still regarded as some of the best to ever do it. This is a celebration of their style, cultural impact and enduring spirit. This is a heartfelt thank you to the culture that has given me so much.
